The Outside Expands

The highly anticipated sixth edition of the New Museum’s signature Triennial, the only recurring international exhibition in New York devoted to early-career artists, returns with The Outside Expands, curated by Vivian Crockett and Isabella Rjeille. The 2027 Triennial showcases an exciting group of 36 artists and collectives who destabilize fixed notions of territory, identity, gender, and sexuality and who foster alternate ways of forging relationships, kinships, and collaborations.

The book and exhibition title takes partial inspiration from a 1979 urban intervention by the Brazilian collective 3NÓS3, X Galeria, in which they branded the entrances of São Paulo galleries with duct-taped ‘X’s accompanied by a message: ‘What is inside remains, what is outside expands.’ The ‘X’ continues to resonate today as both a symbol of refusal and generative potential: what can grow when one moves away from pre-existing structures – institutional, systemic, and conceptual.

Designed by Estúdio Campo, this richly illustrated book features curatorial essays; Crockett and Rjeille in conversation with Mario Ramiro, an original member of 3NÓS3; new essays by Zoé Samudzi, Sara Nadal-Melsió, and Johanna Hedva; and engaging texts on the exhibiting artists from prominent curators and thinkers. Eighteen artist-to-artist dialogues explore the intersections, commonalities, and frictions present in their works, ideas, and practices.
